Marking a Candle is the first Procedure you should perform in candle magic. Marking involves inscribing the candle with real or symbolic instructions of its spiritual intention. You might carve the candle with the name of the target you are working on, or inscribe sacred symbols of Spirits, Planetaries or Elementals to boost its power.

The rule of thumb we use to carve the name in is the same manner in which we apply our oils.

So, if we are trying to draw someone, we carve the name from the bottom of the candle to the top.

If we are trying to get rid of someone, we carve their name from the top to the bottom.

If we need to control, compel or otherwise manipulate a person, the name is carved in a twisting manner. The target's name should be carved a number of times which is appropriate. The target's name should be called out loud each time the name is carved and a command should be issued to them - to resonate through the universe.

After you have properly carved and marked your candle, it is time to apply the herbal materials you are using to strengthen the work. This may consist of one, or multiple oils, powders, minerals and / or dried herbs.

If you are going to use multiple oils on one candle, wash your hands in between applications with a strong alcohol based perfume like Florida Water. Then layer the second oil over the first one you applied to the candle.

Dressing Candles with Oils and Powders Herbal materials strengthen your work. Drawing or removing something, apply oils using the Up or Down Technique  Manipulating a person or institution i.e. - bend over, break up, controlling, come to me, commanding, compelling, court case, marriage, money release you will want to employ the twisting method for applying any oils to the candle.   The Up or Down Technique The UP technique is used to Ddraw something to you. Taking the oil or perfume on your index finger, you move from the base of the candle to the wick, rotating the candle until it is completely covered in oil.      Dress the candle Downward when wanting to remove something.       The Middle  and Out Technique  Spiritualists believe you should begin dressing a candle in the middle, working Upward at first, until the entire top half of the candle is anointed and then go from the middle again Downward to the base of the light.  In this way your prayer is sent from the “heart” of the candle into the Universe.   Witches’ Triangle Method  Begin by dressing the “front” of the candle at the base - moving from left to right. Then move up the candle to the top on the right side—visualizing one side of a triangle. This should be done in one stroke. Go back down to the bottom and “pick up” your line at the base on the left side and move Upwards again— completing the triangle. Now turn the candle over and repeat on the “back” side.   Twisting Method  Apply a fair amount of oil to the palms of your hands and then rub your hands together visualizing the target of the candle. Pick up the candle and begin twisting the oil into it - using a motion like that used to wring water out of a towel. Move from the middle outward until the entire candle is covered in oil. You may need to add more oil to your hands to get good solid coverage. During this process, talk to your target and command them to do as you desire. APPLYING HERBS It is good to do so at this point if you decide to. Simply pour your herbs into a plate and then roll the candle in them. APPLYING POWDERS Powders are the last material that should be added to the candle. The traditional African means for distributing powders is to blow them. There are a couple of very good reasons to blow the powder onto the candle. First, blowing provides a very even coverage and limits wasting expensive material. Secondly, breath has strong spiritual symbolism to it. Blowing on the candle makes it come alive. This is a particularly effective method for candles representing people. When blowing powder, hold the candle by the end in one hand . Put a pinch of the powder in a spoon. Slowly rotate the candle while blowing the powder onto it until evenly covered. Candle Naming Write a petition or name paper, to place under the candle at this point in the ritual.   Name Papers and Petitions Much Spiritual work revolves around writing your prayer requests.   Most spiritual work involves writing a petition, prayer request or giving some sort of written instruction to the Spirit. The written record or request of your intentions is the foundation of the work. The candle is placed on top of the paper describing what the petitioner desires. SPIRITUAL PETITIONS Petitions are requests of God and the Spirit. They are typically used for drawing and blessing works. They may also take the form of an "unsent letter" letter to God. Spiritual petitions can be used as an opportunity to request a change in your life or put down in words those feelings that have remained unsaid. For uncrossing rituals, you may write a letter to God asking him to remove a whole list of problems, people and situations from your life. For a love drawing ritual, you may write to God asking him to bring you a partner with certain qualities. You may need money, and decide you should tell God and the Spirits why you need it and what you plan to do with it once it is received. Once again, this is a part of ritual that needs plenty of your time and attention. Do not write a petition or request of the Spirit in haste. Take your time. Make notes before you begin writing. Make sure you are thorough and complete in your descriptions - especially when writing requests for new love. These types of letters are written on unlined, white paper (typing paper) or on parchment paper. They can be written in blue ink pen, dove's blood ink or china blue ink. Spiritual petitions are used mostly for candle burning rituals. They may be placed in a shallow white plate and covered with holy water. A white seven (7) or fourteen (14) day candle can be sat on top of the paper and burned. Or if the petition is for drawing a certain thing - like new love, more money, a new job or health - the appropriate jar candle can be used. NAME PAPERS Name papers are used when you are working on a specific person. When performing works like "Come to Me", "Commanding", "Compelling", "Stay with Me", "Pay Me Now" or any type of work that manipulates or changes another you should write the name of the target onto paper. Name papers are also used in all types of Court Case work and spells designed to coerce your boss into giving a raise or promotion. They are also used in crossing, revenge and break up works. SELECTING THE RIGHT PAPER For those rituals designed to bless, heal or uncross an individual use unlined, white typing paper or parchment paper. For work designed to cross or manipulate another, most folks use brown paper, which is easily procured from a brown paper grocery bag. TREATING THE PAPER RIGHT For those rituals designed to bless, heal or uncross an individual, cut the paper into a square if you are not using a standard 8.5 x 11.5 sheet. For work designed to cross or manipulate another, write whatever you are going to and then carefully tear the paper into a square so that the edges of the sheet are "rough". WRITING THE NAMES You need to write the name of anyone you are working on. Try to use the person's full name - that means any and all names that were given to them at birth. Write the person's name the appropriate number of times based on your work. Generally you want to write the target's name seven (7) times if drawing and nine (9) times if manipulating them. The minimum number of times the target's name should be written is three (3). For blessing work, use dove's blood ink, blue ink pen or blue China ink. For manipulating, use Dragon's Blood ink or a lead pencil. For crossing and or revenge, use black ink pen, lead pencil or Bat's Blood ink. For any type of love works use a red ink pen or Dove's Blood ink. CROSSING AND COVERING THE NAME At this point, you are ready to begin working on the person. Writing the name paper (or petition) at your altar during the naming step of the candle dressing ritual. Once you start turning the paper or writing commands on top of the person's name, you are in spiritual work mode. No matter what you write over the top the name you need to turn the paper in order to do it. You will be rotating the paper 90 degrees in either case. If you are drawing or blessing, turn the paper to the right. This is a name paper turned 90 degrees to the right and crossed with a command. This is a name paper turned 90 degrees to the left and crossed with a command. If you are removing or sending something or someone away, turn the paper 90 degrees to the left and write the command over the name. Sometimes, you want to cross and cover the target's name with your name in order to establish supremecy over the person. You might use this method for "Boss Fix" work or to force someone to give you employment or a raise. You might use this technique on your husband or mate, when you want to wear the pants in the family. You could write your business name over the business name of your competition, in order to win contracts or draw more customers. In any situation where you need to come out on top or master another, it is appropriate to write your name on another's. Just remember, that when you add your name to a paper, you are building a spiritual connection between you and the target. Most published spells will instruct you to write your name nine (9) times over the target's name. Just turn the paper 90 degrees and write your name in another block of text (see above illus,) to accomplish this. Sometimes, you will be asked to write your name a multiple of nine over the name of the target. To do this write your name in one block of nine and then turn the paper again - writing your name in another block of nine. Continue to turn the paper in the same direction, writing your name nine times until the required number is complete. At left is an image of the different directions the Petitioner's name (Susie Smith) should be written over the Target's name (John Q. Brown) when writing her name twenty-seven (27) times on his. Remember that the name paper is the foundation of your work. It is the directions you are giving the Spirit. It is the target of your energy. Take your time, do it right and focus on your intentions while writing. Consecrate the candle with the four eleme nts: Earth, Water, Fire and Air. Here is a simple method for doing this: Sprinkle some dirt or sand on the candle and say, "By Earth I baptize you as {target's name}." Sprinkle some water on the candle and say, "By Water I baptize you as {target's name}." Quickly pass the candle through the flame of your altar candle and say, "By Fire I baptize you as {target's name}." Pass the dressed candle through the incense smoke and say , "By Air I baptize you as {target's name}."

CAST A WITCH'S LUCKY CANDLE SPELL
take an orange candle anointed with cinnamon oil, clove, or lotus oil.
Light the candle and say 3 times:
"brimstone, moon, and witch's fire,
candlelights bright spell,
good luck shall I now acquire,
work thy magic well.
Midnight twelve, the witching hour,
bring the luck I seek.
By wax and wick now work thy power
as these words I speak.
Harming none, this spell is done.
By law of three, so mote it be!"
Do this spell at midnight.

CANDLE SPELL TO STOP HARASSMENT
Timing: During the waning moon. Use a brown candle (an image candle, if you can)
to represent the person who is harassing you.
Write the person's name on the front and back of the candle.
On a small piece of parchment paper, write:
'From now on, (name) will say nothing but sweet words about me and to me.
By the power of Aradia, so mote it be!'
Put a drop of honey in the middle of the paper and roll it into a ball.
Heat a knife, pin or your athame, make a gash in the candle (in its mouth, if it's an image candle)
and stuff the paper ball into it.
Let the candle burn a little while every night for an odd number of nights, to a maximum
of nine nights. Throw the remnants into flowing water, but save some candle drippings
or ash to sprinkle in the path of your oppressor.

WHITE CANDLE SPELL FOR BLESSING
Get a white candle -- either a plain one (offertory, pillar, or taper) or a figural one in the
gender of the person you want to bless. Carve the person's full name on the candle,
then dress it with Blessing Oil or Holy Oil. For more power, you may place a name-paper
of the person, or a photo, or some personal item of theirs (such as a bit of hair or a snippet
of clothing) either under the candle or next to it. One easy way to do this is to place the
paper or personal concerns under an overturned saucer and put the candle on top of the
saucer. Burn a portion of the candle every day for seven days, pinching it out between burnings.
As you light it each day, say this
[Name], may you be blessed
May all good things come to you
May nothing whatsoever harm you
May your heart be light
May your travels be safe
May your health be good
May your mind be sound
May your friendships sustain you
May you be blessed in every way
If you have a special request for this person (such as that they find a lover, get a
good job, come home safely from a war, or whatever), just add it to the list.
Some people use a large pillar-type candle and keep it going for longer than seven days.
They may make a habit of burning such a candle every day -- or once a week, on Sundays --
for as long as their friend or relative needs help, even doing so for months at a time.
If the candle is large and it is to be burned in this way, it should be re-dressed with
Blessing Oil or Holy Oil once a week: after the initial dressing, you can drop a tiny bit of
oil into the "well" or hole in such a large candle just before lighting it each time.

A CANDLE BINDING MAGIC SPELL
Get a large white candle, the kind that drips wax, and set it up on a tray.
Affix to it a photograph or other image of the person you wish to bind.
Make a ring of sea salt around it. Make a second ring with protective herbs.
Some dried rosemary from the kitchen will not break your bank. Or use sage if you like.
Fill the rest of the tray with images that represent what you are binding the person from: pictures
of your family, keys to your house, legal documents, whatever.
If the problem is too complex for images, write what the person is bound from on slips of
paper and place them around the candle. Maybe they are gossiping and making your life
a misery. Write it down and explain what you want stopped.
Papyrus, or good thick paper made from cotton or linen work best for this.

Use red ink if you are angry, purple ink if you are sad.
Wrap the candle and the image with black thread (use cotton tread or linen or even wool, if possible).
Invoke Isis and "Linda the Binder With Linen Thread."
Say out loud what you are Binding the person from.
Light the candle and leave it burn until the wax begins to drip over the thread and image.
Burn it every day for a week, until the image is thick with wax.
Use this as a meditation device to direct your will to Binding the person.
You will have direct results if you have a just reason for this spell.
You can also Bind a person from harming themselves.
